Caring For Wooden Flooring
Posted on October 09, 2015
Caring for your wooden flooring will help it last longer and keep it looking beautiful.
To vacuum or to sweep
You can either brush or vacuum your real wood or laminate flooring to prevent the build up of dirt and grime that causes discolouration.
Vacuum cleaners come with heads specifically designed to be used on wooden flooring, which makes them ideal for sucking up dust, whereas brushing will usually throw the dust up into the air to settle where you have just swept.
A dust pan and brush are a quick alternative when clearing up small amounts of dirt at the time you spot them.
Washing flooring
It is always best to use the manufacturers recommended floor cleaner.
There is no need to soak your floors to get them clean, after you have vacuumed your floor a damp microfiber mop or cloth suitable for wooden floors should be used along with an appropriate cleaning solution.
Real wood and laminate flooring doesn't need to be cleaned as much as other surfaces, as long as you clear up spills when they happen.
A good soaking
Do not soak a wooden floor. Too much water will soak into the laminate's core which will then cause swelling. The swelling causes the edges of the board to rise up and becomes unsightly very quickly.
The best ways to protect your flooring
Dragging heavy furniture across wood surfaces can scratch your floor. Always try to lift the furniture clear of the floor before moving it or use felt protector pads on the feet of furniture to reduce damage.
Place a doormat outside your property and another one inside. A matt, with bristles, outside will remove the majority of the dirt on shoes. A softer doormat inside your home will soak up water.
Don't be afraid to ask people to remove their shoes, firstly it avoids anything nasty getting walked through your entire home, but it will also stop indentations in real wood floors from high heels.
The sun can bleach the colour from real wood flooring. To make this less noticeable do not put rugs on the floor where there are windows or doors.
Repair Kits
In the event your flooring is scratched there are repair kits available. Wychwood stock repair kits and can show you how to use them and give you advice about the best way to deal with wooden floor damage.
